Rachel Zimmerman, DVM
Dr. Zimmerman is Ruxton Animal Hospital’s owner and full-time veterinarian. Born and raised in Anne Arundel County, she is happy to have established firm roots in Maryland! Her undergraduate studies were completed at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, receiving a bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in chemistry in 2001. She then attended the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine and became “Dr. Z” in 2005. After gaining experience in a variety of Baltimore area veterinary hospitals, Dr. Zimmerman settled in at Ruxton permanently in 2015! Her zeal for veterinary medicine shows, with a strong focus on client education and fear-free practice techniques. Special clinical interests include internal medicine, geriatric care, canine/feline behavior, and cardiology. Dr. Z resides in Middle River with her boxer Huxley, a Dogue de Bordeaux named Libby, and four cats (Skrat, Pavo, Saffron, and Caper). She also has two Morgan mares, Casey & Jolie, who happen to be mother and daughter and whom she boards in Fallston, MD.
Michael Kaplan, DVM
Dr. Kaplan is the founder and previous owner of Ruxton Animal Hospital. A Baltimore native, his love for dogs and cats began at the tender age of six. He graduated from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1964 and from the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1967. Dr. Kaplan pioneered three veterinary hospitals in the Baltimore area before launching Ruxton Animal Hospital in 1996. He quickly established Ruxton as a practice dedicated to quality medicine and superior service. His reach goes far beyond Ruxton and his commitment to the veterinary profession is evident in his time served as both an officer and board member in the Maryland Veterinary Medical Association and the Greater Baltimore Veterinary Medical Association. With a dedication to continuing education and fervent pursuit of excellence, Dr. Kaplan aptly earned the title of one of the areas “Best Vets” from Baltimore Magazine in 1997. Dr. Kaplan resides in Baltimore with his husband, Steve, and their Cairn Terrier, Gertie.

Wanda McGrath, Client Care Specialist
Wanda was born and raised in Baltimore and started working in the veterinary field in 2005, most of that time spent with Ruxton Animal Hospital! You will find her in our reception area with our hospital cat, Judy, tending to our clients’ and patients’ needs at the beginning and end of the appointment process. She enjoys personally getting to know each client, pet, & the bond they share. Wanda lives in Abingdon with her husband and daughter as well as her cat (Willy Wonka), and two guinea pigs (Calico & Coco). In her spare time, Wanda scrapbooks, sews, cheers on the Orioles, and enjoys quality time with her family.
Erin Tucker, Veterinary Assistant
Born and raised in Dundalk, Erin began her adventure in veterinary medicine in 2008. She brings a vibrant, positive energy to Ruxton Animal Hospital and truly enjoys her time spent caring for our patients. Erin’s enthusiasm for learning makes her an invaluable member of our team and she eagerly accepts each new challenge presented. She shares her household with a German Shepherd named Dexter and, when not occupied at work, enjoys walking with her dog, watching football (go Ravens!), and relaxing on the beach.
Sandy Wolbert, Veterinary Assistant
Sandy’s long love affair with vet med began in 2001! A Parkville native, she has spent most of those years at Ruxton Animal Hospital. Since a toddler she’s felt a special connection with the furry sort, and is happy to have ended up in her “dream job”! She enjoys all aspects of the veterinary field and her enthusiasm and energy brighten our exam rooms! Sandy’s own fur-kids include a Golden Retriever named Beaker, a pitbull named Beckett, and two cats (T.G. and Calista). Her personal hobbies include hiking, target shooting, riding horses (dressage specifically), and reading.
Steve earned a degree in elementary education after growing up exploring the Michigan outdoors. In 2002, he retired from Montgomery County Public Schools after 30 years teaching elementary students, secondary students in Mathematics, and staff. He works as bookkeeper — originally for his now husband, former RAH owner and veterinarian, Dr. Michael Kaplan. Hobbies include gardening, carpentry, sewing, and volunteering as botanical tour guide at Baltimore’s Rawlings Conservatory and Cylburn Arboretum. Michael and Steve love their pet Cairn Terrier, Gertie.
